Joseph Parrish: Photographs of Inmates of the Imbecile Asylum. Burlington, N.J., [1886?]
On your cited date, being from 1886, the style of all their clothing and hairstyles indicates that these photos were taken during the late 1850’s through mid 1860’s.
Incredible photos! Thanks! I’ve enjoyed them.
I agree with Noel. This type clothing and hairstyles render it 1855-1867. Thanks for sharing.
‘1886’ is most likely referring to the publishing date.
Why do they have an arched crop? Are these stereo pairs? Are there two images side by side?
Also cant speak to the clothes/hair/etc however the photo emulsions and general focus appear different between some images indicating a different camera/lens and different time period
Hard to say from these scans. I would guess 1870s
The difference in the dates of the photos and the dating of the clothing could be due to the fact that clothing was donated to these institutions much like the churches collected old clothing for the Plains Indians; which is why you see Indians in top hats with parasols.
